Connecting Through Touch and Music 🌟🎶 TACPAC Connecting Through Touch and Music 🌟🎶
TACPAC brings touch and music together to create structured sensory communication between two people. Check out some students from our Engagement for Life pathway, fully immersed in a TACPAC session.
Every sound and rhythm is carefully matched to the texture of the implement, helping students not only explore sensory experiences but also interact meaningfully with others. Through TACPAC, learners build communication skills, connection, and trust with their TACPAC partner—one touch and note at a time.

Connected Communication In Engagement for Life, o Connected Communication
In Engagement for Life, our adult learners stepped into Robin Hood’s forest and demonstrated the true power of individualized communication. Through sensory standing frames, meaningful objects of reference, and high-tech eye-gaze systems, students directed the experience and made their choices known.
This is inclusive learning in 2026: prioritizing autonomy, access, and authentic communication—where every response is valued and every voice is respected. Proof that connected communication is so powerful..

Celebrating Culture and Creativity 🐎✨ Jian-Yi Celebrating Culture and Creativity 🐎✨
Jian-Yi has been sharing how she celebrates Chinese New Year at home, from decorations to traditional food. Our enrichment art session brought the celebration to life, with students exploring the Year of the Horse through creative expression.
Moments like this help our learners connect with their own experiences, share culture, and develop skills in art and communication—all while having fun!

Learning from Those Who Know You Best For the pas Learning from Those Who Know You Best
For the past three weeks, Jayce has been developing his employability skills at HG Walter, working alongside his dad while being supported by his employability coach. While the opportunity came through family connection, the focus has been on Jayce building independence, confidence, and professional workplace skills in his own right.
Through coaching, structured support, and clear expectations, Jayce has learned to work independently as part of the team—showing just how powerful collaboration between family, education, and employment can be.
A fantastic example of inclusive adult learning in action. Well done, Jayce — we’re excited to see what comes next. @hgwalter

Growing Skills, Green Spaces & Wellbeing 🌱🌿 Growing Skills, Green Spaces & Wellbeing 🌱🌿
Check out our students at the Triangle site, who have been working hard to bring a splash of green to the outdoors! From planting flowers to adding vegetables, they’ve been cultivating not only plants but also skills, teamwork, and pride in their environment.
Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature has so many benefits, including boosting mental health, reducing stress, and improving mood—making gardening a truly holistic learning experience.
We’re looking forward to returning after half term to see everything spring into action

Today we held our first Students’ Union meeting Today we held our first Students’ Union meeting across both our sites using Teams. We discussed how we can help to develop college life and champion the student voice!
Each pathway now has a number of union reps who will contribute to making positive change across the college, as well as organising and planning alumni events. We even saw students voting on which film to watch as part of our sensory cinema experience — last year’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is still a tough act to beat (we reckon those chocolate diffuser memories will stick with us for a while!).
It’s great to see students leading the way, sharing ideas, and having their voices heard every step of the way.

🧩 Lego Therapy in Action! 🧩 At Great Oaks Co 🧩 Lego Therapy in Action! 🧩
At Great Oaks College, some of our students use Lego Therapy to develop vital skills such as communication, teamwork, and comprehension. It’s an incredible way to get students working collaboratively while having fun at the same time!
We’ve trained our staff to deliver Lego Therapy effectively, ensuring students can benefit from this hands-on learning approach.
Check out Nash working with his TA, fully engaged in building, problem-solving, and collaborating. We’ve also included a snapshot of a typical Lego Therapy setup—just look at the creativity and focus in action!
Lego Therapy isn’t just about building bricks—it’s about building confidence, communication, and connections. 🌟

Our vocational students have been out and about le Our vocational students have been out and about leafletting for local businesses, and this time they’ve been supporting London Scottish Rugby Club 🏉
Leafletting is a fantastic introduction to the world of work. It supports our students to follow multi-step tasks; such as unpacking, folding, repacking, and delivering leaflets door to door. Along the way, they also practise important road safety skills 🚦
Students also practise their use of Functional Skills — students keep an eye on the time, follow instructions, and carefully read letterboxes to make sure they don’t post leaflets where there are “no junk mail” signs 📬⏰
Many of our students really enjoy leafletting. It gets them out and about, offers a repetitive and structured task, and has a clear end point (either the end of the road or when the leaflets run out!) Plus, they’ve been getting plenty of steps in over the last week or two 👟
If you’re a local business and would like some leafletting completed, please do get in touch. Some businesses go on to offer work placements in their settings or make donations to our charity — a real win-win for everyone 🤝
Take a look at some of our students out and about, getting the job done!

✨ Student Spotlight: Paris ✨ Meet Paris, one ✨ Student Spotlight: Paris ✨

Meet Paris, one of our amazing students who joined Great Oaks College in September 2025 as part of our Life and Living Pathway.

Paris’ journey to college hasn’t been easy. Ongoing health challenges had a significant impact on her learning and understandably affected her relationship with education. As with many young people, transitioning to an adult college was a significant step for Paris.

When Paris first joined us, she needed time, space, and patience to feel safe and to build trust with both staff and her peers. Over time, that trust has grown into lovely, meaningful relationships — particularly with her teacher Sania and her specialist 1:1, Narinder, who support her every day. 💛

Through ongoing multi-disciplinary working, we’ve been able to build on existing support and introduce an Acheeva to further support Paris’s posture. A special moment came when Paris was able to communicate that she no longer feels pain in her neck and hip — a huge achievement and a powerful reminder of how the right support, at the right time, can make a real difference. 🌟

Paris’ progress is also a reflection of the incredible advocacy and partnership from her mum, who continually champions Paris to achieve everything she can.

We are so excited to see how far Paris will go over the next three years on her Life and Living course. We are incredibly proud of her and love having her as part of the Great Oaks community. 🌳💚

Life and Living students on the move! Our student Life and Living students on the move!

Our students had a fantastic day out learning all about travelling on public transport as part of the Try the Train scheme. We made our way to the Kew Steam Museum for a special lunch

Although our train home was cancelled, everyone took it in their stride, catching the bus back with smiles (and scones!) all around.

🧭 Try the Train is a wonderful initiative that helps young adults with SEND build confidence using public transport — an essential life skill for independence.

A huge thank you to Anna Stearman from the Southeast Communities Rail Partnership for organising the trip, and to the Maids of Honour for the delicious scones and cake. 💛

🎉 This week, we held our Annual Leavers Celebra 🎉 This week, we held our Annual Leavers Celebration at the stunning Hilton Hotel, Syon Park @hiltonlondonsyon — a cherished tradition at Great Oaks College where students come together to celebrate in style and mark the end of their journey with us. 💙

We owe a huge thank you to the @hilton team, who have generously hosted us for the past three years — donating their beautiful space, staff, and time to create an unforgettable experience. This year, they treated all our students and staff to a delicious three-course meal, completely free of charge. 🍽️✨

🍽️ Dine in the Dark at Great Oaks College! 👀✨

This week, our students—Luke, Jess, Robert, Hayden, and Noor—hosted a brilliant "Dine in the Dark" experience for staff, supported by our habilitation specialist Joe.

They’ve spent weeks preparing a three-course menu, learning to cook using @rnib RNIB talking hobs, and practicing how to host and guide blindfolded guests—giving staff a first-hand insight into what it’s like to dine with a visual impairment. Our students used their own experiences to support and lead the event with confidence.

Staff found the experience challenging—but felt privileged to take part.
Principal Nickyie admitted, “I couldn’t even find my mouth with the soup!” 🍲
Meanwhile, teacher Nancy nailed the challenge—eating pizza with a knife and fork like a pro! 🍕

Massive congratulations to our students for raising awareness in such a powerful (and tasty!) way. 💪👏

We’re so proud of the resilience and teamwork they showed, returning full of confidence and pride! 💪✨
