Building Skills for Life Through Volunteering Our Building Skills for Life Through Volunteering
Our LL2 learners, alongside Dylan, have been actively engaging in their volunteering placements and what a fantastic experience it’s been!
From promoting the Syon Park Foodies Festival through leafleting, to preparing animal food at the SEN farm, our learners have been developing a wide range of transferable life skills that will support them well beyond the classroom.
These opportunities help build:
✅ Confidence and independence
✅ Communication and teamwork
✅ Responsibility and time management
✅ Practical, real-world work skills
Volunteering not only strengthens employability but also allows our learners to contribute positively to their local community, gaining a real sense of achievement and pride in their work.
We’re incredibly proud of their enthusiasm, resilience, and the way they’ve represented the college out in the community. 👏

Wellbeing Wednesday Last Wednesday, our staff cam Wellbeing Wednesday
Last Wednesday, our staff came together for a wellbeing walk on our INSET day – showing support for our Deputy Principal, Rich, and his wife Sophie 💙
In July 2025, Sophie – a Speech and Language Therapist – was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour. While going through radiotherapy and chemotherapy, she has shown incredible strength, raising nearly £25,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity.
https://www.justgiving.com/page/sophie-sparrow-murr-2?utm_medium=FA&utm_source=CL

The walk was a chance for us to stand together and show support. At Great Oaks, we don’t just support our students – we support each other too.
You can help by sharing this post and donating if you are able to. More information is available on Sophie’s fundraising pages .

🏫 Learning with Purpose 🏫 We love that our 🏫 Learning with Purpose 🏫

We love that our students have an active role in maintaining their college.

Our curriculum is designed to help students develop the skills they need for both work and everyday life, and our buildings play a key part in making this learning meaningful. There are no worksheets here – instead, students take part in real, purposeful tasks that make a genuine difference to their environment.

This hands-on approach not only builds practical skills but also encourages pride and ownership. You can see that pride in action, as our students work together to help maintain and care for their college.

At Great Oaks College, ICT in the classroom plays At Great Oaks College, ICT in the classroom plays a vital role in making learning accessible, meaningful and exciting for all of our students — particularly those on the Engagement for Life pathway.

Our students benefit hugely from specialist ICT equipment that supports communication, independence and interaction with the world around them. Switches are used for cause and effect, communication and even controlling the environment — you can see these in action in the photos.

Eye gaze technology empowers students to communicate their wants and needs, express likes and dislikes, and take part in fun, engaging activities. We also use a range of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) tools, such as the Go Talk 4, to support every learner’s voice.

The Great Oaks Charitable Trust was set up to help our students truly thrive. However, this life-changing equipment comes at a cost:
• Eye gaze device: £8,000–£12,000
• Go Talk 4: around £200
• Big Mack switch: around £150

These essential tools are not covered by standard funding — but they make a life-changing difference every single day.
If you would like to help us continue providing these opportunities and make our students’ educational experiences even more special, please consider donating

Last week our alumni joined us for our 2026 Sensory Cinema 🎬
Organised by our Student Union, with the support of our wonderful teacher Agnieszka, this years film choice was Wicked and our hall was transformed into a magical cinema experience inspired by the Land of Oz.
Students immersed themselves in a world of green and pink, with sensory elements bringing the film to life. We even different scents for different scenes and characters, making the experience truly multi-sensory and magical.
It was so lovely to welcome some of our former students back to join in the fun and to see one of our beautiful new sites. Seeing everyone together made the day even more special ✨
There was just one request from our audience… that we take the show on the road and bring our magical sensory cinema to our Triangle site next! 🎥🌪️
Watch this space… because at Great Oaks we like to do things wickedly well! 💫

We’re incredibly proud of Zaynab, one of our fou We’re incredibly proud of Zaynab, one of our fourth-year students, who has completed a range of placements over the years as part of her journey towards employment.
She particularly enjoyed working in @mahabacafe . We’re hopeful that she will be able to continue her learning and employment journey there when she leaves Great Oaks College, as part of their supported internship programme.

It has been really beneficial for Zaynab to build familiarity, confidence and routine in the work place, We are so grateful to Mahaba Cafe for their ongoing support.

A huge achievement for Zaynab has also been travelling using public transport to her placement each day. As part of her employment coaching journey, she has successfully accessed the Piccadilly Line to commute within in her local area.

For many, the commute is just part of the day but for Zaynab, this represents determination, resilience and real progress.

We couldn’t be prouder of how far she has come and can’t wait to see her continue to flourish in the next stage of her journey.
We’re so proud of Hayden and the fantastic progr We’re so proud of Hayden and the fantastic progress he’s made during his placement at Tesco

Using his memory and organisational skills, Hayden has helped ensure the shop floor is fully stocked and looking its best. He’s been a real credit to the team, always ready to help wherever he’s needed.

As part of his placement, Hayden also completed travel training with his Employment Coach, learning to travel to work more independently by bus.

As a result of his travel training, Hayden can now confidently talk you through all the possible routes to his placement, even planning for diversions or breakdowns.

Thank you to @tesco for continuing to provide these valuable opportunities. Our students love working with you, and we truly appreciate your ongoing support in helping them build skills, confidence and independence.

We’re delighted to share that Sophia, one of our We’re delighted to share that Sophia, one of our first-year students, has started a placement at @park_lane_stables .

Sophia is helping to muck out and care for the horses with this wonderful charity, gaining hands-on experience and building valuable skills for the workplace. Working with animals can be such a positive and meaningful pathway into the workplace. We are lucky to have a setting like Park Lane Stables right on our doorstep.

What makes this even more special is that Sophia previously accessed the stables socially. It’s so important that we enjoy our jobs, and that hobbies and interests can translate into employment opportunities.

For many young people with additional needs, horses can have an incredibly calming and therapeutic effect, creating the perfect environment to grow in confidence and independence.

We can’t wait to see how Sophia continues to learn on the job and develop her skills for the future. We’re so proud of her already!

St Marys It’s been a pleasure working alongside St Marys
It’s been a pleasure working alongside St Mary's Convent in Chiswick over the past three years. It is a fantastic example of what a truly inclusive environment looks like.
Our students have been contributing to life at the convent in meaningful ways, with some students moving onto paid and voluntary roles once they’ve left education.
✨ Ithya helped set up the on-site café.
🌱 Chissum planted and cared for his own flower bed.
🧺 Shreyan works in the laundry and has secured a role, ready for when he leaves college.
🔧 Jordan has joined the grounds team, building valuable skills and confidence.

Each of our students is given a uniform, helping them feel part of the staff team and fostering a real sense of pride and belonging.
We’re incredibly proud of their achievements and grateful to St Mary’s Convent for the opportunities they provide, enabling our students to prepare for adulthood.

✨ Sneak peek! ✨ Just before half term, we had ✨ Sneak peek! ✨

Just before half term, we had Helena, (@everywhere.send) from @everywherephotography__ capturing some wonderful moments of our Life & Living students at our Triangle site. 📸

We wanted a specialist photographer who truly understands our students and the support they need and we think Helena did just that.

This photoshoot is part of updating our website and prospectus now that our students have settled into their new college sites. We couldn’t wait to share a few of these beautiful photos! Check out our students in action, using some of the specialist strategies that help them excel in their learning. 😄

Connecting Through Touch and Music 🌟🎶 TACPAC Connecting Through Touch and Music 🌟🎶
TACPAC brings touch and music together to create structured sensory communication between two people. Check out some students from our Engagement for Life pathway, fully immersed in a TACPAC session.
Every sound and rhythm is carefully matched to the texture of the implement, helping students not only explore sensory experiences but also interact meaningfully with others. Through TACPAC, learners build communication skills, connection, and trust with their TACPAC partner—one touch and note at a time.

Connected Communication In Engagement for Life, o Connected Communication
In Engagement for Life, our adult learners stepped into Robin Hood’s forest and demonstrated the true power of individualized communication. Through sensory standing frames, meaningful objects of reference, and high-tech eye-gaze systems, students directed the experience and made their choices known.
This is inclusive learning in 2026: prioritizing autonomy, access, and authentic communication—where every response is valued and every voice is respected. Proof that connected communication is so powerful..

Learning from Those Who Know You Best For the pas Learning from Those Who Know You Best
For the past three weeks, Jayce has been developing his employability skills at HG Walter, working alongside his dad while being supported by his employability coach. While the opportunity came through family connection, the focus has been on Jayce building independence, confidence, and professional workplace skills in his own right.
Through coaching, structured support, and clear expectations, Jayce has learned to work independently as part of the team—showing just how powerful collaboration between family, education, and employment can be.
A fantastic example of inclusive adult learning in action. Well done, Jayce — we’re excited to see what comes next. @hgwalter
